Havaldar Hokato Hotozhe Sema: A Journey of Resilience and Triumph
In October 2002, Havaldar Hokato Hotozhe Sema faced a life-altering event during a counter-terrorism operation in Chowkibal, Jammu and Kashmir. An unexpected explosion resulted in the loss of his left leg below the knee, shattering his aspirations of joining the elite Special Forces. The incident left him in a state of despair, with many around him believing that his dreams had been irrevocably dashed.
Yet for Sema, this tragedy marked the beginning of an extraordinary journey characterized by resilience and determination. He found solace and support at the Army Paralympic Node located at BEG Centre in Pune, where he began to rebuild his life with newfound purpose.
A Remarkable Athletic Achievement
At 40 years old, Sema achieved an incredible milestone by winning a bronze medal in the men’s F57 shot-put category at the Paralympics held in Paris. His impressive throw of 14.65 meters contributed significantly to India’s overall medal tally—now totaling 27 medals: six golds, nine silvers, and twelve bronzes. His inspiring journey through para-athletics has made him a prominent figure within this competitive field.
Sema’s entry into shot-put was facilitated by senior army officials who recognized his potential while he was receiving treatment at an Artificial Limb Centre in Pune. Although he began training later than most athletes—at age 32—in 2016, he embraced this new challenge with enthusiasm and commitment.
Early Competitions and Continued Success
In pursuit of excellence, Sema participated in various competitions starting with the National Para Athletics Championships held in Jaipur back in 2016. His success continued as he earned a silver medal at the Morocco Grand Prix in 2022 followed by another bronze medal at the Asian Para Games hosted in Hangzhou. Despite narrowly missing out on medals with a fourth-place finish at the World Championships scheduled for 2024, Sema remained undeterred.
His debut appearance at the Paralympics proved pivotal; facing fierce competition from around the globe only fueled his determination further. Secured firmly to his throwing chair during each attempt showcased not just physical strength but also mental fortitude as he pushed through every challenge presented before him.
During this high-stakes event, on one occasion after reaching beyond 14 meters on his second throw—he ultimately surpassed all expectations during his fourth attempt with an outstanding personal best throw measuring 14.49 meters which clinched him that coveted bronze medal position.
Global Recognition
The gold medal was claimed by Yasin Khosravi from Iran—a two-time para world champion—with an astonishing record-breaking throw measuring up to15.96 meters while Brazil’s Thiago Dos Santos secured silver after achieving a distance of15 .06 meters .
Sema’s remarkable achievement did not go unnoticed; Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly celebrated it via social media platforms expressing pride over such accomplishments stating: “A proud moment for our nation as Hokato Hotozhe Sema brings home Bronze! His incredible strength & determination are exceptional.”
