WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has sparked controversy following her comments regarding the racism and hateful remarks directed at players during the ongoing rivalry between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese. This discussion arose during a recent interview where Engelbert addressed the troubling trend of fans introducing race, sexuality, and other non-basketball-related issues into their commentary.

Engelbert likened the current situation to a historic moment in sports, referencing the iconic rivalry between Larry Bird and Magic Johnson that began in 1979. She stated on CNBC’s “Power Lunch,” “There’s no more apathy. Everybody cares. It is reminiscent of that Bird-Magic moment when two rookies from different backgrounds entered the league.”

However, she emphasized that rivalries are essential for drawing viewership: “What I know about sports is that you need rivalry. That’s what keeps people engaged; they want to see competitive games rather than everyone being cordial.”

In response to Engelbert’s remarks, Terri Jackson, Executive Director of the Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA), expressed disappointment with her approach. Jackson articulated what she believed should have been Engelbert’s response to inquiries about racism and misogyny faced by players: “There is absolutely no place in sports—or life—for vile hate speech or discriminatory language aimed at our athletes on social media.”

Jackson further criticized any notion that rivalries could justify toxic behavior among fans: “This isn’t merely about rivalries or celebrity figures driving a business model; such harmful fandom must not be tolerated or ignored—it requires immediate action.”

She acknowledged the growing interest in women’s basketball over recent years, particularly due to an exciting rookie class led by Clark and Reese. Jackson also extended gratitude towards long-time WNBA supporters while welcoming new fans who have recently joined.

Following backlash from her initial comments, Engelbert sought to clarify her stance through social media: “In a recent interview discussing negative aspects of social media related to WNBA rivalries and race issues, I want it clear—there is no room for hate or racism within our league or anywhere else.”

The rivalry between Clark and Reese gained traction after their notable performances during college championships; both players have made significant strides early in their professional careers with their respective teams.

As discussions continue around these athletes’ impact on women’s basketball culture—and as passionate debates arise among fans—the focus remains on fostering an inclusive environment free from discrimination within all levels of sport.
