Transformers: A New Era Begins with Transformers One
The box office performance of 2023’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts may not have reached the monumental heights seen during Michael Bay’s tenure, yet it still garnered enough success to assure fans that another sequel is on the horizon. This upcoming installment promises an exciting twist involving a crossover with toy lines. However, before we dive into Transformers 8, audiences can look forward to Transformers One, which is set to hit theaters this month.
A Bold Step into Animation
Lorenzo di Bonaventura, a long-time producer for the Transformers film franchise, shared insights about this new animated feature during promotional events for last year’s digital release of Rise of the Beasts. He emphasized that this film represents perhaps the most significant narrative his team has ever brought to life within the Transformers universe.
“You simply cannot create this story in live-action,” he stated. “If we attempted it in that format, production costs would skyrocket—potentially doubling our usual budget for a major Transformers project. Animation allows us not only to manage expenses more effectively but also grants us creative freedom. Just think about Cybertron—what does it truly look like? This medium gives us a chance to define its visual identity.”
Exploring Origins and Relationships
Transformers One takes viewers back in time, exploring the early days of conflict between Autobots and Decepticons while introducing an intriguing cast lineup. Chris Hemsworth lends his voice as a young Optimus Prime, stepping into shoes previously filled by Peter Cullen. Meanwhile, Bryan Tyree Henry from Atlanta takes over as Megatron from Frank Welker. The ensemble cast also features Scarlett Johansson as Elita One, Keegan-Michael Key voicing Bumblebee, Jon Hamm portraying Sentinel Prime, and Laurence Fishburne as Alpha Trion—all set against the backdrop of Cybertron.
This film marks Industrial Light & Magic’s first fully animated feature since their work on 2011’s acclaimed Rango. While they contributed to George Lucas’ lesser-known project Strange Magic, di Bonaventura highlights their return with enthusiasm for what they achieved with Rango. He notes that recent animated successes like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Paramount’s forthcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem have paved new avenues for animation within blockbuster storytelling; however, he insists that ILM and director Josh Cooley (Toy Story 4) are crafting something uniquely original.
A Tale of Friendship and Betrayal
Di Bonaventura expressed his excitement about delving into what he describes as “the origin story” behind Megatron and Optimus Prime’s relationship when they were known as Orion Pax and D-16 respectively. He likens their dynamic to biblical tales such as Cain and Abel but emphasizes its complexity regarding power dynamics and personal growth.
“This narrative explores themes surrounding power—the way it’s wielded by individuals,” he explained enthusiastically.
