Dame Laura Kenny Advocates for Future Commonwealth Games Hosts
Dame Laura Kenny expresses her hope that a city will emerge to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, especially as Glasgow prepares for a more limited version in 2026.
Following the withdrawal of Victoria, Australia, due to escalating expenses, Glasgow has been officially designated as the host city. However, there are concerns that several events may be omitted from the upcoming games.
Kenny, who holds the title of Great Britain’s most decorated female Olympian, emphasized that without significant commitment from cities to fully embrace hosting responsibilities, the future viability of the Commonwealth Games could be jeopardized.
“I sincerely hope someone steps forward and declares ‘we’ll take on the next one,’ because once sporting events fade away, they seldom return,” Kenny shared during an interview with BBC Breakfast.
Reflecting on history’s importance in sports events like these she stated: “The Commonwealth Games have a rich legacy; it would be unfortunate to let it slip into obscurity and disregard its historical significance.”
This multi-sport event unites numerous nations on an expansive platform; thus maintaining its continuity is crucial.
Currently planned for Glasgow is a streamlined version featuring potentially only ten sports. The specific disciplines that may be excluded remain uncertain at this time.
Kenny highlighted her desire for organizers to prioritize non-Olympic sports during this selection process. “I truly hope they consider non-Olympic disciplines because for many such as netball, this event provides their only opportunity for visibility,” she remarked.
She further noted: “When decisions are made about which sports might be cut or retained, it’s vital those choices reflect fairness since while the Olympics attract massive audiences—many of these sports view their participation in the Commonwealth Games as their own Olympic experience.”
Dame Laura Kenny’s call to action underscores not just her passion for cycling but also her dedication to preserving opportunities across various athletic fields within international competitions like the Commonwealth Games.
