New Insights into Black Voter Preferences for the 2024 Presidential Election

Recent findings from the Howard University Initiative on Public Opinion shed light on the preferences of black voters as we approach the 2024 presidential election. The survey reveals a strong inclination towards Vice President Kamala Harris among black voters in key battleground states.

Support for Harris vs. Trump

The poll indicates that an impressive 82% of participants favor Harris, while only 12% express support for former President Donald Trump. This significant gap highlights a clear preference among black voters in seven pivotal swing states.

A small fraction, approximately 5%, remains undecided about their choice, and just 1% plan to vote for candidates outside of Harris or Trump.

Age-Related Voting Trends

The data also uncovers notable differences in voting patterns across age demographics. Among black voters aged over 50, a remarkable 89% support Harris compared to just 8% who back Trump and another 4% who prefer alternative candidates.

Conversely, younger black voters show slightly different trends; while still predominantly supporting Harris at a rate of 75%, Trump’s backing has increased to 16%, with alternative candidate support rising to 9%. This generational divide is particularly pronounced among male voters: those under fifty favor Harris by a margin of 72% to Trump’s 21%, whereas older men exhibit an even stronger preference for Harris at an impressive rate of 88%.

Survey Methodology and Demographics

Conducted between September 4 and September 11, this comprehensive survey included responses from around one thousand registered black voters aged eighteen and older across Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. The margin of error stands at ±3.1 percentage points.

Participants were reached through various methods including landline calls, mobile phones, and text-to-web surveys.

Current Political Climate

As we move closer to the election date in November next year—where voter turnout will be crucial—these insights provide valuable context regarding how demographic factors influence electoral choices within the African American community. With ongoing discussions surrounding issues such as economic equity and social justice gaining traction nationally since previous elections in recent years (for instance: according to Pew Research Center data from early this year), it’s evident that these topics will play significant roles in shaping voter sentiment moving forward.

The Howard University poll serves as an essential barometer reflecting current attitudes among black voters ahead of what promises to be a highly contested presidential race next year.
