NEW DELHI: Following his exclusion from the squad for the upcoming two-match Test series in Sri Lanka, renowned all-rounder Glenn Maxwell expressed that he would have made a similar choice as the Australian selectors. Having last participated in Test cricket back in 2017, Maxwell acknowledged the rationale behind his omission from Australia’s 16-man roster for this tour, particularly with the selectors opting for uncapped all-rounder Cooper Connolly.
“It’s simply a matter of selection,” Maxwell remarked. ”There will always be individuals eager to be part of it, and I openly admit that I was keen on joining this tour. However, I completely grasp their reasoning.”
He further elaborated on Australia’s current standing: “Given that they are already set for the World Test Championship final and have a couple of Tests lined up in Sri Lanka along with several sub-continent tours planned over the next few years, it makes sense to evaluate some new talent under those conditions.”
Maxwell highlighted how significant this opportunity is for newcomers like Connolly: “What an incredible experience it will be for him on his first Test tour. Honestly, I would have arrived at the same conclusion as they did,” he stated during an interview with Fox Sports.
Recently showcasing his prowess by scoring 90 runs off just 52 balls during a BBL derby victory against Melbourne Renegades while playing for Melbourne Stars, Maxwell also mentioned that he isn’t contemplating his future in Test cricket at this moment. ”I’m not making any long-term plans right now; I’m looking forward to taking a week off before our last home and away game on Sunday.”
Reflecting on his explosive innings, he noted: “Not everything was going my way; I felt like I was connecting every second or third ball effectively. Given how challenging the pitch was playing, my strategy involved applying pressure until I received either an over-pitched delivery or one slightly wider so that I could swing freely.”
Maxwell admitted there were moments when he felt out of sync: “It still seemed like there were quite a few times where I’d play and miss; many shots didn’t find their mark either.” He concluded by emphasizing simplicity in approach: “I aimed to stay at bat as long as possible while waiting patiently for one good delivery to hit cleanly.”
