In an exciting blend of two iconic franchises, the latest prototype from Takara Tomy merges the essence of Optimus Prime with Basara Nekki, the rockstar pilot from Macross 7. This innovative creation was showcased at the T-Spark Zone event.
A New Era in Toy Design
The newly introduced prototype is part of a collaboration between Transformers and Macross 7, aptly named “Basara Prime.” The figure transforms from a fighter jet reminiscent of the VF-19 Custom Fire Valkyrie to a robot that embodies both Optimus Prime’s heroic stature and Basara Nekki’s musical flair. Notably, it even includes a guitar accessory to highlight its rockstar roots.
Release Timeline and Pricing Information
Scheduled for release in Winter 2025, fans are eagerly awaiting further announcements regarding pricing. As it stands now, Takara Tomy has yet to disclose how much collectors will need to invest in this unique piece.
Expanding Collaborations Across Franchises
This partnership between Transformers and Macross 7 is not an isolated incident; it forms part of a broader initiative by Takara Tomy announced back in August 2024. This initiative also includes collaborations with other major franchises such as Godzilla, Monster Hunter, Spider-Man, and Zoids—demonstrating a trend where popular culture icons intersect through collectible toys.
Recently announced collaborations have also seen Transformers team up with fan-favorites like Naruto and Sonic the Hedgehog—further expanding their reach into diverse fandoms.
Historical Context: A Legacy Revisited
Interestingly enough, this isn’t Transformers’ first encounter with Macross lore. Shōji Kawamori played an instrumental role in designing toys for Takara’s Diaclone line before co-creating the original Macross series. Many Diaclone figures were later rebranded as Transformers products by Hasbro—including what would become known as Optimus Prime.
Kawamori himself designed the VF-19 Custom Fire Valkyrie featured prominently in Macross 7, although there has been no confirmation regarding his involvement in creating Basara Prime specifically.
