Although no instances of the severe viral infection known as Mpox have been reported in Tamil Nadu, the state’s health department has instructed all district medical officers to remain vigilant for any potential cases. This proactive approach aims to ensure that healthcare facilities are prepared to respond swiftly should any cases arise.
Understanding Mpox Transmission
Mpox, caused by the monkeypox virus, is a contagious disease that primarily spreads through close physical contact between individuals. It can also be transmitted indirectly via contaminated surfaces touched by an infected person. Awareness of these transmission methods is crucial for effective prevention and control measures.
Monitoring and Preparedness at Healthcare Facilities
Officials from the Tamil Nadu health department have emphasized the importance of readiness at taluk-level hospitals and Primary Health Centres (PHCs). District medical officers are tasked with closely monitoring these facilities to ensure they can effectively manage any suspected cases.
In response to this potential threat, the state government has established fever screening centers at four international airports: Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, and Tiruchi. These centers are equipped with isolation wards designed specifically for handling suspected Mpox patients.
Laboratory Testing Capabilities in Place
The King Institute of Preventive Medicine and Research located in Guindy has been designated as the primary laboratory for testing Mpox cases within Tamil Nadu. This facility is one of 22 laboratories across India identified by the Union Ministry of Health for conducting such tests.
Health authorities have confirmed that comprehensive fever screening systems are operational at all four international airports. Additionally, isolation wards have been set up not only at these airports but also within four key government hospitals throughout the state.
State Officials Assure Readiness
During a recent statement to IANS, State Health Minister Ma Subramanian reassured citizens about their preparedness: “The state is equipped with testing and treatment resources. All necessary precautionary measures have been implemented.”
He further elaborated on how promptly information regarding individuals exhibiting symptoms was communicated between state officials and their counterparts in the Union government. The details concerning travel history and hospitalization locations remain confidential to protect patient privacy.
Government Actions Following Suspected Cases
The Government of India recently reported identifying an individual displaying symptoms consistent with mpox who was subsequently isolated and treated appropriately. In light of this development, continuous monitoring efforts targeting travelers arriving from affected regions are being conducted across Tamil Nadu’s international airports.
At each airport facility, medical isolation wards have been established alongside digital displays providing critical information about mpox symptoms while encouraging travelers experiencing such symptoms to seek immediate medical assistance.
Dedicated Isolation Facilities Across Hospitals
Isolation wards specifically designated for managing mpox patients have been created within four major government hospitals:
- Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (Chennai)
- Government Rajaji Hospital (Madurai)
- Government Medical College Hospital (Coimbatore)
- Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (Tiruchi)
Each ward consists of ten beds dedicated solely to treating suspected or confirmed cases of mpox.
By implementing these extensive measures—ranging from airport screenings to hospital preparedness—Tamil Nadu aims not only to safeguard public health but also enhance its capacity for rapid response against emerging infectious diseases like mpox.
