Snapchat Introduces Footsteps Feature for iOS Users

Snapchat has launched an innovative feature for its iOS users, enabling them to track the various locations they have visited and from which they have shared snaps. This new functionality, known as Footsteps, is only operational when Ghost Mode is disabled on the app. In addition to recording new destinations, it can utilize saved Memories to reflect on previous journeys. Recently, Snapchat also unveiled significant updates at its Snap Partner Summit 2024, including the integration of the Gemini large language model (LLM) into My AI and the introduction of fifth-generation Snap Spectacles.

Tracking Your Adventures with Footsteps

The Footsteps feature allows iOS users to monitor their travel history through Snap Map. When first activated, it will use existing Memories to establish initial steps; however, future uses will rely on real-time location data for tracking movements. Initially exclusive to Snapchat+ subscribers, this feature has now been made available to all iOS users. Importantly, this information remains private and can only be accessed by the account holder; it functions solely when Ghost Mode—designed to conceal a user’s location from others—is turned off.

Managing Your Location History

Users have control over their Footsteps history and can choose to delete it if they decide not to continue using this feature. Staff members at Gadgets 360 confirmed its availability after updating Snapchat for iOS version 13.9.0.40.

Exciting New Features Announced at Snap Summit 2024

During the recent Snap Summit 2024 event, Snapchat revealed a collaboration with Google aimed at integrating Gemini LLM into My AI—its artificial intelligence chatbot service. This partnership promises enhancements in computer vision capabilities alongside improved processing abilities across text, audio, images, videos, and code.

Additionally introduced was the Snap AI Video tool that generates videos based on text prompts; however, access is currently limited exclusively to content creators within the platform. Another intriguing addition includes a new AI Lens that allows users to visualize themselves as older versions of themselves—a fun twist that adds depth and creativity within user interactions on Snapchat’s platform.
