Inaugural Address Moves Indoors Due to Severe Weather Conditions
On January 20, President-elect Donald Trump has announced that his inaugural address will be held indoors, responding to forecasts predicting dangerously low temperatures in Washington, D.C.
Change of Venue for Inauguration Events
Originally planned for the exterior of the U.S. Capitol, the address and accompanying speeches will now take place within the Capitol’s rotunda. This adjustment also extends to other inauguration festivities; both the inaugural parade and all three inaugural balls are set to occur at Capitol One Arena in Washington.
Historical Context: A Rare Indoor Ceremony
This marks a significant moment as it recalls Ronald Reagan’s inauguration in 1985 when he too was sworn in indoors due to frigid weather conditions affecting the capital.
Safety First: A Message from Trump
In a message shared on his Truth Social platform, Trump expressed concern for public safety amid these extreme temperatures. He stated that he does not wish “to see people hurt or injured” during this event. He highlighted that “dangerous conditions” would affect not only attendees but also law enforcement personnel, first responders, police K9 units, and even horses involved in security operations.
Trump further advised potential attendees to “dress warmly” if they choose to participate despite the cold weather.
Live Viewing Opportunities Amidst Cold Forecasts
For those unable or unwilling to brave the elements outside, Capitol One Arena will provide an opportunity for live viewing of Trump’s inaugural address.
Weather predictions indicate a harsh day ahead with temperatures plummeting as low as -11°C (12°F) and peaking at -5°C (23°F) on inauguration day—a stark reminder of winter’s grip on Washington D.C.
A Vision for Unity and Safety
Despite these challenges posed by Mother Nature, Trump remains optimistic about ensuring a safe environment for all participants. He concluded his statement with an encouraging note: “Everyone will be safe; everyone will be happy; together we shall Make America Great Again.”
