Reflections of Jane Curtin on the Early Days of SNL

Jane Curtin, a prominent figure from the original cast of “Saturday Night Live” (SNL), expressed her initial doubts about the show’s potential during its formative years. In a recent interview with The New York Times, as the iconic program gears up for its 50th season premiere, she shared her memories of that first broadcast, describing it as a whirlwind experience.

“I didn’t really focus much on the audience,” Curtin reflected. “I thought to myself that anyone watching must be quite foolish. This mindset caused me considerable anxiety. To cope with it, I created this protective bubble around myself; we had our work to accomplish within that space.”

The Energy Beyond the Bubble

Despite her self-imposed isolation during performances, Curtin soon became aware of an electrifying atmosphere outside their studio walls. “You would walk past people who were visibly shaken,” she recounted. “They could sense the energy radiating from what was happening at 30 Rock, and it was incredibly thrilling.”

Curtin was part of SNL’s inaugural lineup when it premiered in 1975 alongside notable talents such as Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Garrett Morris, Laraine Newman, Gilda Radner, Michael O’Donoghue and George Coe.

A Challenging Audition Experience

Reflecting on her audition process for SNL brought back memories filled with pressure and uncertainty. “I walked into the room and they asked me what I had prepared—like one of those classic anxiety dreams,” said Curtin.

Fortunately for her nerves and career trajectory at that moment in time, she had some old material tucked away in her purse along with valuable experience gained from theater work and participation in an improv group called Proposition based out of Boston.

Struggles to Find Her Place

Curtin candidly admitted that fitting into this new ensemble proved challenging initially: “I was rather quiet; no one seemed to notice me,” she explained. “I wasn’t accustomed to pitching ideas or being assertive.”

However, despite these challenges regarding visibility within such a dynamic cast environment—she maintained confidence in being hired: “They chose me for a reason; they’re compensating me after all! It would be unwise not to utilize my talents.”

A Lasting Legacy Beyond SNL

Curtin remained part of SNL until 1980 before transitioning into other successful television roles including appearances on shows like “Kate & Allie,” which garnered her two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series along with stints on series like “3rd Rock from the Sun” and “The Librarians.”

In an exciting development related to this legacy is an upcoming film titled Saturday Night, which will depict events leading up to SNL’s debut episode airing live over four decades ago. In this film adaptation set against historical context surrounding its launch day excitement—actress Kim Matula will portray Jane Curtin while Gabriel La Belle takes on Lorne Michaels’ role alongside Cory Michael Smith as Chevy Chase among others including Ella Hunt playing Gilda Radner.

As fans eagerly await both nostalgic reflections through interviews like these alongside fresh interpretations via cinema—the impact left by pioneers such as Jane Curtin continues resonating throughout entertainment history today.
