Residents of the Bronx are urging Mayor Eric Adams to take immediate action against what they describe as an “open-air drug market” that has overtaken a section of Melrose Avenue. This area, particularly near the subway station at 149th Street, has become a hotspot for public drug use and transactions occurring openly during daylight hours.
Disturbing Scenes Documented
An investigation by FOX 5 New York revealed alarming scenes in this neighborhood, including instances where individuals were seen engaging in drug use and even collapsing on the street after vomiting. Such incidents have raised serious concerns among local residents about safety and quality of life.
One resident expressed their frustration to FOX 5 New York, stating, “It’s like hell on earth.” Many community members feel that City Hall is turning a blind eye to these blatant illegal activities while allowing drug usage to persist unchecked.
Impact on Local Businesses
Hassan, who has owned a clothing store on Melrose Avenue for two decades, shared his distress over the situation. He now hires someone daily to clean up human waste outside his shop due to the unsanitary conditions created by loiterers. “People avoid passing by when they see [feces] and urine,” he lamented. “They prefer shopping elsewhere.”
The deteriorating environment has led Hassan to lose numerous customers who no longer wish to navigate through such unpleasantness.
Political Response and Community Concerns
In response to these escalating issues, Congressman Ritchie Torres—who represents this part of the Bronx—has reached out directly to Mayor Adams with an urgent plea for action. In his correspondence, Torres called for dismantling the open-air drug market along Melrose Avenue.
A spokesperson from City Hall responded via email stating that their administration is committed to ensuring safety for all New Yorkers while balancing livability with access to necessary services. They emphasized proactive measures aimed at providing high-quality support alongside increased police presence in affected areas.
“We acknowledge Congressman Torres’ concerns and look forward to collaborating with him towards creating a safer city,” concluded their statement.

Despite acknowledging efforts from City Hall, Congressman Torres stressed that ultimate responsibility lies with Mayor Adams himself. He pointed out that it is within the mayor’s purview as head of both law enforcement and health departments to address these pressing issues effectively.
“The mayor runs this city; he oversees both police operations and health initiatives,” Torres stated firmly during an interview with FOX 5 New York. “He should be mobilizing both sectors urgently.”
