A mother has been convicted of manslaughter following the tragic deaths of her four sons in a house fire that occurred while she was out shopping.

Deveca Rose, aged 30, left her two sets of twins unattended when a devastating fire engulfed their home in Sutton, located in south-west London, on the evening of December 16, 2021. The children—Kyson, Bryson, Leyton, and Logan—were unable to escape from the locked house and tragically perished under a bed during the incident.

During her trial at the Old Bailey court, it was revealed that Rose was acquitted of one charge related to child cruelty.

The jury reached their decision with an overwhelming majority vote of 11 to one after deliberating for over three hours. Judge Mark Lucraft KC described the case as “heartbreaking.”

Evidence presented during the trial indicated that prior to this horrific event, the family had been living in deplorable conditions filled with garbage and human waste. Prosecutor Kate Lumsdon KC informed the court about these dire circumstances: “The house was cluttered with rubbish everywhere; both the toilet and bath were unusable due to being filled with debris. Instead, buckets and pots served as makeshift toilets.”

On that fateful day, Rose had gone grocery shopping while leaving her four boys alone at their rented residence when either a cigarette or tea light ignited a fire in the living room. The boys attempted to escape by running upstairs while calling for assistance.

A neighbor made efforts to force open the front door before firefighters arrived on scene; however, they discovered all four children’s bodies hidden beneath beds within minutes. Despite immediate medical attention at the site followed by transport to a hospital facility where resuscitation attempts were made throughout that night—their lives could not be saved due to fatal inhalation injuries caused by smoke.

Rose has been released on bail pending sentencing scheduled for November 15th.
