Guterres Defends UNRWA Amid Accusations
On Sunday, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stood firm in his defense of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), asserting that only a small number of its members are linked to Hamas. This statement comes after Israeli Ambassador to the U.N., Danny Danon, claimed last week that Hamas has completely taken control of UNRWA’s operations.
While Guterres acknowledged that there had been some infiltration by Hamas within the organization, he emphasized during an interview on CNN that there is no substantial evidence supporting Israel’s allegations. “It is true that a few individuals were involved in the events of October 7,” he stated, condemning those actions as unacceptable.
He further remarked, “Many claims have been fabricated and do not reflect reality at all.” He admitted the existence of tunnels beneath UNRWA facilities but clarified that these tunnels are prevalent throughout Gaza and do not indicate any official support from UNRWA for Hamas activities.

Danon criticized both Guterres and the U.N., suggesting they are ignoring significant issues regarding Hamas’s influence within the agency. His comments came while defending an Israeli airstrike on a school operated by UNRWA located in a Gaza refugee camp.
Danon asserted, “The casualties from this IDF strike included nine individuals with blood on their hands—some were involved in the horrific attacks on October 7.” He insisted there was clear evidence linking these individuals to Hamas while they were disguised as local employees of UNRWA.
According to statements from Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), this particular school was reportedly being utilized as a command center for Hamas operations despite being officially closed for educational purposes.

Recent reports have highlighted ongoing concerns about potential ties between some staff members at UNRWA and militant activities. Just last month, it was revealed that nine employees were dismissed due to their suspected involvement in acts related to Hamas’s attack which resulted in nearly 1,200 fatalities across southern Israel on October 7.
